Boston Product Management Association (BPMA) is here for you in your job search. Our feature Recruiter Corner dives into the mind of a recruiter to learn what factors are important in extending a job offer. Today Risa Kahn from recruiting firm NDT discusses the importance of storytelling during your search, even, or especially, in the age of AI.

Hiring in the current job market is strategic, highly selective, and often focused on industry-specific talent profiles. Many companies are creating new roles to support growth but are cautious and risk-averse, prioritizing measurable impact and resource optimization. To stand out, job seekers must present a clear, tailored professional story across all platforms and interactions.

Storytelling Recommendations for Job Seekers

Craft a concise, customized narrative: Be ready to clearly articulate who you are, your core skills, and what you want next. Prepare to share this story verbally with your network to help them understand your background and goals.

Be empathetic: Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes: what are 3-4 key points about you that they should know and why do those points set you apart?

Remember numbers rule: When possible, incorporate numbers – product revenue, profitability, cost savings, market share, etc. – when describing your work experience.

Target each opportunity: Before every interview, research the company and role. Be specific about why you’re excited about the position and how your skills align with their needs.

Customize targeted resumes as a marketing tool: Your resume should tell a focused story about your experience, achievements, and the value you bring. Tailor it for each job, emphasizing relevant skills and measurable results.

Align your LinkedIn profile: Ensure your LinkedIn profile matches your resume and narrative. Discrepancies can raise red flags for employers. Optimize your profile for the types of roles and companies you’re targeting, using keywords and highlighting skills in demand.

Leverage networking: With employers more selective, networking with trusted recruiting advisors and personal/professional networks is more effective than mass applications. Use your story to build connections and uncover opportunities.
